The Spirit Lives On:
A Special Concert with the New BrunswickChamber Orchestra
to Commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Kristallnacht

November 2 • 4:00 PM

Kristallnacht, or "The Night of Broken Glass," took place on November 9, 1938. More than one thousand synagogues were destroyed and tens of thousands of Jewish businesses and homes were ransacked. It marked the beginning of the horrible chain of events that led to the Holocaust. In a moving tribute to European Jewry and their continuing inspiration, Makhelat Anshe Emet will join with the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra, singing works of Barash, Janowski, Weill, and Bernstein. The New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra is directed by Mark Trautman, former organist at Anshe Emeth.

Mitzvah Day
Thursday, December 25

Each Year, Anshe Emeth members devote a full day to partnering with God to make our world more complete. Mitzvah Day offers a wide array of activities throughout the community. In past years, participants have been Mitzvah clowns, visited the elderly, taken oral histories, worked on fix-it projects in the Temple, and reached out to the homeless and needy in our community. This year promises to be the biggest and best Mitzvah Day yet! We will conclude the day with our annual dinner at the Temple with our homeless shelter guests. Mark your calendars for December 25, and be sure to join us as we roll up our sleeves and make lives better for others!

Interfaith Men's Shelter
December 21-28
and another week TBA

Each winter, Anshe Emeth opens its doors for two separate weeks to host an overflow shelter for our local homeless men. Along with other houses of worship in New Brunswick, we are privileged to provide a safe, warm, place for a group of homeless men who would otherwise be on the streets during the cold winter nights. Each night at the shelter, volunteers at the Temple check in our shelter guests and spend the night at the Temple to help out. The Mitzvah of working at our shelter can be a life-changing experience, one well worth the effort. Please contact Rabbi Fellman or Phyllis Pollak to sign up for a night working at our shelter.

6th Grade Retreat
Friday, January 11-Sunday, January 13

Our 6th grade students spend a weekend of fun and Jewish learning at Camp Harlam in the Poconos with Rabbi Miller, Rabbi Fellman, Cantor Ott, Gail Kroop, and Rabbi Kogan. It’s a time for students and staff to engage in serious text study, to create Jewish crafts, to sing, to socialize, and (hopefully) to go sledding (if it snows).

Shalshelet, the Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music, seeks to foster the creation of original music and to expose wider audiences to innovations in Jewish religious music. Shalshelet’s mission is to use music to build bridges both within and outside the Jewish community. Shalshelet’s composers are drawn from across all Jewish denominations and the group disseminates new compositions without regard to the professional or lay status of the composers. Listen to the freshest sounds in Jewish music as Cantor Ott, Makhelat Anshe Emet, and Shirei Emet present the best of “Music from Shalshelet.”

Havdalah Concert

Bring the whole family to enjoy an evening of fun family friendly music and a dessert reception with Elana Jagoda. Elana is a music educator, performer, and composer who brings soul and innovation to Jewish music. She adds new dimensions to this music genre by blending her energetic folk-rock vibe with her passion for world music. She infuses a unique spiritual quality into the music she brings to both performance and prayer. Elana has delighted diverse audiences as a song leader, early childhood music specialist, and most recently a cantorial soloist. In addition to leading Shabbat and High Holy Day worship services, Elana conducts fun and engaging Tot-Shabbats, and brings hip, new songs to the religious school classroom. Elana has recorded and toured with the group “Hip Hop Shabbat,” which creatively fuses Friday night Shabbat liturgy with hip-hop beats. Her grooving new solo album Zum Gali Gali, brings an inspiring sound to Jewish family music. On Zum Gali Gali you’ll find your favorite Jewish children’s songs revamped with a funky, world-beat flavor.
